176 F2PIP / Second Tuner Second (PIP) Tuner The second tuner contained in the MM101 is used exclusively for PIP tuning functions. With one exception noted below, when broadcast programming is the source of both signals, the PIP and Main video is "swapped". The PIP tuner signal will only appear in the PIP window and main tuner signal will always be the main video. The two tuners are retuned to the required channels during the swap. When the same channel is displayed in PIP as is displayed in the Main display, the PIP window receives its signal from the Main tuner/IF. Further, the PIP tuner local oscillator (LO) is tuned to a frequency different from the normal range. This assures local oscillators from both tuners cannot concurrently add and complies with FCC Local Field Radiation requirements. The second tuner is identical to the CTC197 main tuner in topography and electrical operation. See the CTC195/197 Technical Training Manual (T-CTC195/197-1) for further information.

F2PIP Overview The F2PIP IC provides Pix-in-Pix functions for the MM101. The F2PIP contains analog switches necessary to perform the swap and overlay functions. All A/D's (Analog-to-Digital converters), D/A's (Digital-to-Analog Converters) and digital circuits necessary to process and control the small overlay picture are contained within the F2PIP IC. The F2PIP IC, U18100 is designed to be a 1-chip solution for most picture-in-picture functions. In addition, it provides a digital comb filter for the main picture Y/C separation. The F2PIP contains analog switches to select between two composite or two component (S-Video) sources. Any combination (two of the four possible inputs) can be selected for the main picture or the PIP picture. The design of the F2PIP IC is intended to keep external components to a minimum. All inputs are designed to accept industry standard 1 volt (p-p) video sources, and all outputs are designed to provide the same standard 1 volt outputs.

F2PIP / Second Tuner 179 The larger on-screen picture is referred to as the "main" picture and the small window is referred to as the "PIP" picture. The main tuner is always responsible for the main picture, while the PIP tuner always provides signal for the PIP window. The exception is when a video source input is selected as the main or PIP picture. When looking at the tuner outputs, if the two pictures are swapped, the main tuner will retune to the PIP channel for the large screen (main) and the PIP tuner will retune to the previous large screen channel selection and display it in the PIP window. The exception, as previously noted is when the PIP and Main window are tuned to the same channel.

The following screens show the relative position of the PIP window, information display and menu and their appearance with a video background. Note the PIP window may be moved around the perimeter of the screen on some models. The menu and information display are fixed.

180 F2PIP / Second Tuner F2PIP IC The F2PIP is divided into several sections; the PIP processor, comb filter, analog video switching, PIP overlay switching and IIC bus decoder sections. Both the main and PIP pictures are first converted to digital signals for processing. The main picture is applied to a comb filter. The digitized PIP picture is applied to the PIP processing section within U18100. After comb filtering and PIP processing, both signals are converted back to analog where they are applied to the main video switch (which is also analog) and the PIP overlay switch (analog). F2PIP Communications The IIC bus section controls F2PIP functionality. Registers holding control information are distributed throughout the IC. The F2PIP IC must receive and transmit status data, however it operates on a 3.3V supply. The MM101 uses 5V IIC bus lines. To provide the necessary logic level shift, bi-directional buffer transistors Q18103 and Q18104 are used. F2PIP Signal Switching The F2PIP IC provides all control for PIP operation. The main and PIP composite video signals from switching IC, U16501-15/16, are input to pins 1 and 51 of U18100. The two S-Video inputs are applied directly to U18100 at pins 3 & 5 and 7 & 11. Internal to the IC, the S-Video luma and chroma signals are combined to form a third and fourth composite signal. These four composite video input signals are applied to two analog switch circuits within the IC. One is the "Main" picture analog switch and the other is the "PIP" picture analog switch. The outputs of both analog switches are applied to 8 bit A/D (analog-to-digital) converters. The two uncombined S-Video inputs are both applied to an S-Video switch. The output of the analog switch processing (the "main" signal) is applied to an A/D converter producing an 8 bit digital representation of the composite signal. From here, the digital comb filter separates luma and chroma information. After main picture digital video is separated by the comb filter, the digital luma and chroma signals are converted back to analog signals by an 8 bit (luma) and a 10 bit (chroma) D/A converter. The luma and chroma signals then exits the IC at pin 49 and 47 where they are applied to the S-Video switch IC U16500 at pins 11 & 20. The output of the PIP analog switch (within U18100) is also digitized and applied to a PIP processing circuit that separates luma and chroma. The separate PIP luma and chroma signals are both converted back to analog via two D/A converters. The analog PIP luma signal then exits the IC at pin 33, is buffered and reenters at pin 35. PIP luma is then applied to the "Over-Lay" switch. The PIP chroma signal exits at pin 31, is buffered and reenters at pin 37. The PIP chroma signal is also applied to the overlay switch. Remember, the output of the Main Analog switch is processed by the digital comb filter and always serves as the main picture except when S-Video is selected as the main picture by the S-Video switch.

Figure 12-5, F2PIP IC Processing

The function of the S-Video switch is to select between the output from the Main Analog switch and the S-Video input at pins 3 and 5. The output of the S-Video switch always serves as the Main picture video and is applied to the Overlay Switch. The PIP picture Y/C signals are also applied to the Overlay switch. The Overlay switch combines the analog luma and chroma (Y/C) signals of both the main pix and the PIP pix with the PIP signal overlaid on top of the main picture. This signal is then output at pins 39 and 41 where they are sent to the Video Processor , U22300, pins 13 and 15 for further processing. The F2PIP Switch, U18100, is controlled via the IIC bus. However, the data line from the microcomputer to IC U18100 is a two-way data communications line. The data going to the IC (function and control information) is buffered by Q18103 and input into pin 27. The data coming out of the IC (status information) exits the IC at pin 26 and is buffered by Q18142 before its sent back to the System Control Microcomputer U13101. The IIC bus decoder in U18100 is responsible for controlling all the switching circuits inside the F2PIP IC according to instructions from system control. For internal synchronization and switching purposes, a vertical sync signal and a horizontal signal are combined and input at pin 24 of the IC.
